The Pauline Epistles:: In this installment of Reading the Papyri, we examine one of Michigan's most famous papyri: a 3rd century codex, written in Greek and found in Egypt, containing the Letters of St. Paul. Known to New Testament (NT) scholars as P46 (for Papyrus 46), most of this codex survives today—part of it here at the University of Michigan, the rest in the Chester Beatty Library. St. Paul is the patron saint of missionaries, evangelists, writers, journalists, authors, public workers, rope and saddle makers, and tent makers. His feast day is on June 29 when he is honored with Saint Peter, although he is also honored on other days throughout the year, Janu for his conversion, Febru for his shipwreck, and Nov.
The catholic letters, like those of the Pauline corpus, are also arranged in roughly descending order of length, but the three Johannine letters are kept together and Jude is placed at the end. The genuine letters of Paul are earlier in date than any of our written gospels. For each of Paul's letters we read from, there is an introduction to the city and everyday life at the time Paul was there. For example, for six weeks from 3 June in the next issue, we will be reading and exploring passages from Paul’s second letter to the Corinthians.
